National Curriculum for Parents

National Curriculum for Parents

At Ashfield Valley Primary School, we offer our pupils a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and matches the educational needs of our children. Teachers have developed a thematic approach to learning, making links between different curriculum areas leading to meaningful and interesting topics. Where subjects do not fit into the current topic, they are taught discretely to ensure there is good coverage.

Subject areas that are taught include: English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Geography, History, Art, Design & Technology, Music, PE, RE, Latin and RHE. Key skills such as literacy, numeracy, thinking skills, interpersonal skills, metacognition and emotional literacy are interwoven through the learning experiences and subjects.

It is our aim that our curriculum reflects our ethos and priorities meaning that children are inspired to take responsibility for their learning and tackle challenges with confidence. Our timetable is flexible, allowing the teacher to structure the learning to suit the children and the subject matter. There is a strong focus on metacognition – teaching children about how they learn and also that they can learn anything if they put the effort in.

Each term knowledge organisers and newsletters are shared with parents and pupils. If you would like a copy of these, please contact the class teacher. Please see the national curriculum on the government’s website – click here
